Spanish is not only a language, it is a vital bridge to link the American continent to the other side of the ocean. The studies show that the necessity of Spanish in terms of international connection, not only in diplomatic but also in business and cultural relations is growing.
To consider the opposite and not giving the deserved credit would be a naive act. Taken this argument as a base for their newly published book "Spanish in International Relations" (El español en las relaciones internacionales), Javier Rupérez and David Fernández Vítores, offer a new insight and show the value of Spanish language in international relations.
Spanish, which is the official language in around 21 countries, is one of the oldest also. In United Nations, it is one of the official languages among English, French, Russian, Chinese and Arabic. In European Union, it is one of the most used language , therefore there may lead a necessity of Spanish speaking representatives to create a good connection.
In the book, they demonstrated some demographic details presented by Francisco Moreno Fernández y Jaime Otero Roth that put the reasons why Spanish should be taken into account seriously. Here you can see a few examples:
- Spanish is relatively a homogenous language which has a weak risk of fragmentation.
- Spanish is a language of one of the oldest culture. Several breakthroughs in history, richness and the quality of literary works in this language have added a great value.
- Spanish is an international language. Spanish is spoken by 450 million people roughly throughout the world.
- Spanish is geographically a compact language. The adjoining occupation of the Spanish speaking countries enables a dominion of the language in American continent and creates a strong bound.
- Spanish is a language in expansion. Except that it is spoken in at least 21 countries, the number of Spanish speakers has been rising gradually.
- Spanish generally provides a high level of communication and creates a great deal of diversity between communities.
Spanish will maintain its importance in the future thanks to Latin American influence in United States, holding a %12 of market share and target consumer. With this book, the authors introduce a clear vision of the current reality. Spanish is an essential language to hold the strong interrelationship and speaking one more language is always an advantage in this competitive platform.
