2 universities in Barcelona ranked among the 200 best universities in the world

by Lauren Simmonds - Friday, September 14, 2012

Among the top 200 universities in the world are the Autonomous University of Barcelona, ranked 176th and the University of Barcelona, in position 187. The Autonomous University of Barcelona has risen 18 places since last year was when it was ranked No. 194. The three institutions currently at the top of the world rankings are Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), followed by the University of Cambridge and Harvard University, respectively. MIT is a private higher education institution that is divided into six schools and colleges. It focuses on scientific and technological research, which makes it one of the leading academic institutions in the United States devoted to teaching and research in science, engineering and economics. According to QS World University Rankings, to study in Barcelona is one of the top destinations for students. Barcelona is in the 11th position of best choices while Madrid is in 16th place and behind Paris in 1st place. The rankings take into account conditions such as quality of life and the price of studies.

Barcelona is ranked 105th in terms of its academic reputation – its specialty subjects being Humanities, Social and Natural Sciences and Engineering & Technology. QS World University Rankings were released on 2012-09-11 on the digital pages of the newspaper, “The Guardian” and the Korean newspaper, “Chosun Ilbo”. The crisis and the cuts do not seem to have affected the performance of Spanish Universities with a dozen Spanish schools improving their positions in the World Rankings: the Autónoma and Carlos III in Madrid, the University of Navarra, the Polytechnic of Valencia, and Universities of Granada and Zaragoza. Among the 700 best campuses are Salamanca, Valencia, Murcia, Seville and Santiago de Compostela. The parameters taken into account included the quality of research and rates of recruitment for graduates.

Public universities have suffered significant cuts over the past few months in the form of budget cuts, a decline in scholarships, falling wages and an increase in working hours. For the moment, this seems to have affected only the number of foreign students studying in Spanish classrooms, which has fallen this year, according to the QS World University Rankings: "recent events may have damaged the international reputation" of our country
