University of Alcala to run new course in Gypsy Culture

by Lindsay Cook - Tuesday, June 14, 2011

The University of Alcala and the Institute of Gypsy Culture have signed an agreement to produce university courses about gypsy culture.

There will initially be one course run; Gypsies in Spain - Their History and Culture, which will be worth 6 credits. The course will largely be directed towards those who are studying humanities though anyone can take it.

The course will be taught by two professors who have gypsy heritage themselves and who are experts within the field. It will begin in 2012 and will emphasise the importance of the gypsy culture within Spanish culture.

It is hoped that in time the university will also be able to offer courses about the gypsy languages and that the university will become a centre of documentation about the gypsy population.
