IED students create new metro maps for Madrid

by Lindsay Cook - Wednesday, March 2, 2011

Students studying at the Instituto Europeo di Design have been challenged by their lecturer, Javier Noguerol to redesign the Madrid metro map.

This task has been set as part of their graphic design course. The task should improve their attention detail and use of space. The group of second year students have two weeks to develop their ideas.

Noguerol presented his own example of the map to the class as a reference. His design puts the Sol station at the centre of the map and sees line 6, circle round this point.

It is hoped each student will use their imagination to create something original and unique. One student is focusing their efforts upon the tourists who come to Madrid, another upon creating a simple and child friendly map, whilst others are changing the layout of the lines.

At present there are no plans to replace the current map created in 2007 by Sañudo. However the metro plans which the students have produced are available to look at on the internet and the task has received publicity in the national press.
