European University of Madrid awards prizes for Young Social Enterprise

by Lindsay Cook - Tuesday, February 15, 2011

The European University of Madrid awarded 10 prizes for young social enterprise last week. The prizes were given to people aged between 18 and 29 who have developed and run an ethical business for at least 6 months.

The first prize was given to Inés Cuatrecasas whose project focuses upon ethical fashion. Her business “mille collines” designs, manufactures and sells clothing which is made in Rwanda.

The businesses which entered the competition were varied. Some of the many areas they focused upon were sport, recycling and social exclusion. The judges considered the projects level of integration into society, the sustainability of the business and the strength of the leadership as well as the results that they have achieved. This is the third year in which the competition has been run.

Each prize winner received a donation of 3000 Euros and the chance to receive training at the university, which will focus upon their needs. This reflects the university´s wish to promote its students as responsible citizens, not just successful business people.

The winner, Inés Cuatrecasas will now represent Spain in the Youth ActionNet Global Fellowship Program which will take place in October 2011.
