Saloufest is a traditional sports organisation which is held in April in Salou (Tarragona) that is nearly one hour distance from Barcelona. Students from the UK, Ireland and Scotland have come to Spain to have fun during their stay for one week.
Salou is one of the popular holiday resort on the Costa Dorada, with beautiful beaches & fantastic hotels. Every year it is held in two parts. The first part of the group comes between the dates 31st March and 6th April, the second part starts from 9th till 15th April.
The organisation company started the festival with the slogan "More Sports Than Ever", but it is hardly to see the competitive atmosphere or fair play in the ground. Almost 8000 students are enjoying their days partying, drinking till they black out, throwing up in any fast food restaurant and when they realize they can't find their hotels they pass out in one of the corner.
The idea basically is a great one to open the Spanish culture to British students and with a potent bound like sports for the youth to have some entertainment. During the day the sports contests go on and at night young people lose themselves with crazy parties.
There are two sides who are in favour and against of this organisation. The local residents and tourists are not happy with the scene in the streets. They can’t sleep at night and the local tourists who find a chance to getaway during the week of Easter and seek some peace lying under the sun, "but it is hardly to do so" most of the visitors said.
The happy side is the artisans, bar and store owners. They are happy with the extra income of three weeks, it even creates job opportunities for local people. According to the restaurant owners, the first group has left nearly three and a half million euros.
Despite the debates about the Saloufest, it is a great way for the students to come to Spain, know the culture , spend wonderful time and add great contribution to Spanish economy. What is to bear in mind that they are young and they are in the phase of “More Fun Than Ever”.
