UEM Revamps its Master's in Computer Game Design

by Matthew Leake - Friday, December 9, 2011

The Universidad Europea de Madrid (UEM) announced this week that it will pioneer a new master's course in Computer Game Development and Programming. This is the ninth iteration of the popular course that has to evolve to meet the ever changing demands of a sector that is constantly growing.

A recent study has shown that 24% of adults in Spain frequently play videogames in one form or another. This figure confirms that the gaming sector is growing year on year and as such, the demand for computer game designers also increases. Professional games designers in Spain have commented on the need to look abroad when it comes to finding new people to work for them. The aim of the new course offered by the UEM is therefore to reverse this trend and create a pool of home grown game design and programming talent in Spain to take advantage of the numerous employment opportunities available.

As the demand in videogames rises, so do the expectations of the gamers. Producers can no longer get away with a game that contains flashy graphics to please their audiences. These days the general public expects games to contain more substance, with complex storylines and compatibility across a variety of platforms. The new Computer Game Development and Programming master's therefore focuses on network games and the creation of more extensive user profiles so that those studying at UEM will be at the forefront of what is possible in the video gaming world.
