Salamanca's Social Science Success

This week saw the University of Salamanca’s hugely successful ‘Social Science Festival’ come to a close. The aim of the festival was to try and encourage and involve the public to discuss and learn more about the current economic situation.
With over 30 meetings all open to the public, the festival transformed Salamanca’s centre into an open forum of discussion about the global economy and the role of social sciences in society.
Events covered topics from electoral systems, youth unemployment and the lack of trust in the Spanish government (see video below), with some fascinating guest speakers, and question sessions where the general public was able to grill leading economists on the financial crisis.
The festival made the field of social sciences completely accessible to non-specialists, and aimed to help people interpret and understand the social phenomena that are of growing concern in Spanish society, separating them from ideology and politics and addressing them in a rational way.
With so many successful events, let’s hope the Social Science Festival of 2012 is just as engaging!
