Since the boom in social network use in recent years, professionals have decided that such a big business is definitely worth studying in more depth.
Now, thanks to the telecoms company Orange, who have sponsored a program at Madrid's School of Telecommunication Engineering (ETSIT) since 2002, the first formal course of its kind, entitled 'Science of Networks', will be offered to students.
Part of the Polytechnic University of Madrid, the Orange Chair programme will run the Science of Networks course alongside its other projects, which include using social networking as an analysis tool and developing new innovations.
Science of Networks will focus on investigating the behaviour and activity of social network users and is expected to produce the world's most advanced studies in this particular area of research.
With 80% of Spain's 20 million internet users belonging to a social network, the course is sure to be a popular choice for research pioneers in this ultra-modern field and will be a valuable asset to the Spanish university system.
