The University of Cantabria and a number of companies in the same region are set to become an international point of reference for renewable energy, owing to a pledge of 70 million euros by the Ministry of Science and Innovation.
The funding will kick-start a program for the development of renewable energy in Cantabria which will benefit researchers at the University and almost 1,600 business in the region as well as creating an estimated 20,000 new jobs.
The development agreement was signed on Monday in Santander by the Minister for Science and Innovation, Cristina Garmendia, and Vice President of the Cantabrian Government, Dolores Gorostiaga. The deal was made on the basis of already very promising advancements in renewable energy in the region and the president of the University, Federico Gutiérrez-Solana, issued a forward-thinking statement to match, saying "Cantabria will become a centre of research and development of worldwide importance."
At the forefront of technological research projects, the University of Cantabria will be supporting huge international players such as Vestas, Siemens, Acciona, E.ON, Repower and Iberdrola.
